Connecting Professional Women in Wellington and Saugeen Area
The Women of Wellington Saugeen Area began in September 2009 when women in the Town of Minto and Township of Wellington North came together to form a network that sought to support women in business. Since then, the group expanded to include the Town of Hanover, Municipality of Brockton, and the Municipality of South Bruce. During the Pandemic, like many of you, we took the opportunity to look at our network and how best to support women in business moving forward.
In 2022 WOWSA became a program of Saugeen Connects. The mission of Saugeen Connects is to collaborate and positively impact area economic growth, support youth retention and development, support growth and retention of businesses; and integrate efforts to leverage immigrant attraction to the area as residents, workers, entrepreneurs, business owners, operators, and investors. One of the key pillars of Saugeen Connects is Women and we all agree that this is a great decision for both WOWSA and Saugeen Connects.

Meet the Entrepreneur Chef Crystal Hindman, from Fired Up, Hungry Hangar, and Landing Gear Diner.
A Grey Bruce girl through and through, I was born in Owen Sound and moved to Hepworth with my family when I was five years old. I attended Hepworth Public School and later Wiarton District High School. At the age of 13, I landed my first job as a dishwasher at a local golf course restaurant. I was drawn to the kitchen, constantly asking questions and offering to help. My first boss noticed my eagerness and promoted me to a cook — and from there, my passion for cooking only grew each summer.
At 16, I moved out on my own and faced a new challenge: I became a teenage mom at 17. Despite this, I continued to work at various restaurants under talented chefs, soaking up all I could. I moved from cook to line cook, and in 2005, my dream came true when I was offered a head cook position and then promoted to Restaurant Manager. It was a big step forward in my career, and one that confirmed I was on the right path.
In 2012, I returned to the workforce as a waitress at a local bistro in Chesley, where I made connections that would change my life. By 2014, I was offered the chance to run a new venture — the Grilled in Action Food Truck. After a year of hard work building its reputation, I achieved a longtime goal: on May 10, 2015, I became the owner of the truck and rebranded it as Fired Up at Grilled in Action. I had achieved my dream of being a business owner before turning 35.
The food truck quickly gained recognition, winning 1st Place for Best Food Truck in Grey-Bruce County in the 2017 Owen Sound Sun Times Readers Choice Awards. In 2018, I took home several Platinum and Gold awards, including Best Poutine and Best Caterer. In July 2019, I expanded with the opening of Hungry Hangar Restaurant at the Wiarton International Airport, and in September 2021, I launched the Landing Gear Diner at the Saugeen Municipal Airport in Walkerton. Looking ahead, I am close to completing my studies at George Brown Culinary School, with plans to challenge the Red Seal Chef exam and earn my certification by the end of 2026.
